A Cabernet with an Amarone Soul, Onepio 2016
Last Saturday I opened my final bottle of Onepio 2016. There is always a certain sense of loss when opening the last bottle of a wine you’ve come to love. This one is among the first wines I clearly remember being truly enthusiastic about. The first time we visited the Veneto region in Italy was in the summer of 2014 if I’m not mistaken. It was there that I bought the 2011 Onepio, and I immediately loved it. Later on, I purchased six bottles of the 2016 vintage, and given that it was considered a particularly good year, it certainly did not disappoint either.
I’m presenting the Onepio 2016, a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The winery is located near the beautiful Lake Garda. Unfortunately, their website is no longer available, but I did find some information here on winetraveler. Of course, they also produce the famous Amarone, and you can feel that influence in this wine as well. It has a subtle sweetness reminiscent of Amarone, but without overpowering the wine. It maintains a nice balance between sweetness, alcohol, and acidity. I paired it with a homemade pizza, but it would also work well with most red meat dishes. It can even be enjoyed on its own, if you ask me. Right now it seems to be at its peak, although I said the same thing two years ago, so I suspect it will hold at this level for at least a few more years.
Next time I’ll try to pick something other than Italian. I do love them, about 60% of my cellar is Italian, but I also have a good number of French and Spanish ones.
Cheers!
