A Taste of Barolo

You probably all know Barolo, a famous wine from the Piedmont region of Italy. I recently drank this Barolo that I bought from the Osvaldo Viberti winery. This one is their Serralunga d'Alba, named after the village where the grapes are grown. The winery produces several Barolos with different styles and price ranges.

It's a very affordable Barolo that I bought at the time for only €28. That's about as low as you can go for a still qualitative Barolo. It is ready to drink now but should still hold nicely for another 2–3 years.

In Piedmont, 2018 was a good vintage, although not considered an exceptional one. For that reason it makes sense that their entry-level Barolo is already approachable. The wine tasted fresh and well-balanced, with a pleasant level of acidity, which is typical for the Nebbiolo grape.

I decided to open this bottle because I'm travelling to the Piedmont region during the Easter holidays, and our first stop will be the Osvaldo Viberti winery. I wanted a small reminder of what to expect during my visit. I'll definitely write one or more blog posts about our stay and about the winery and its tastings in particular. I still have their 2016 Barolo Riserva in my cellar that I haven't opened yet, so I'm very curious to revisit their higher-tier wines.
