Why I built Wineventory…

Hello! My name is Thomas, and I am a software developer by day, wine enthusiast by night. I have been passionate about wine for some time now, and over the years I have built up a collection of bottles that I cherish. However, I found it difficult to keep track of my wines, their tasting notes and their physical location. I wanted a simple way to organize my cellar and share my thoughts on each bottle.

At first I kept an excel sheet on Google Docs, but it quickly became too cumbersome to maintain. The list of wines I drank became too long. Copy-pasting bottles from the "stock" section to the "consumed" section became too error-prone on the small screen of my smartphone.

I started looking for apps that would allow me to easily add, edit, and delete wines. There were a few apps that I tried, but none of them met my needs. What was always missing was a simple way to organize my wines and actually be able to find them back. An actual representation of my wine racks if you will.

Then in the summer of 2020 during peak corona time, it hit me. I decided to build a web app suited for my needs and Wineventory was born. I have been working on and off on it adding features and improving it over the years. Although the last 2 years it was mostly in maintenance mode, I now found a renewed vigour to continue working on it.

This blog

Next to the app (currently only available for open testing), which you can use as a regular website as well, I decided to also keep a blog. Here I will write about the interesting wines I drank or the worthwhile wineries I visited. And anything else about wine that crosses my mind.

For a first post I'll try to keep it short. There is a wall of text here already. This is a Capitelle de Centeilles 2010 from the Minervois region of France.

I actually discovered this wine during an online wine tasting during corona lockdown. Yes, they actually sent samples over and provided a live explanation of the wines. My friends and I immediately liked the wine. It’s a dark, full-bodied wine with hints of cherry and plums that could handle the strong flavours of a steak or game. I have had the pleasure of buying and tasting various vintages. The 2005 and 2008 vintages I recently tried are at, or even past, their peak, so be careful with those. If you do end up buying them, it's to drink right away!
